The Fund provides ancillary group benefits that offer peace of mind and security to employees and their eligible dependents through collective bargaining agreements with Participating Employers. “Ancillary Benefits” refer to benefits that are used to supplement your hospitalization/medical benefits.  Benefits provided by the Fund are Dental, Vision, Hearing, Short Term Disability and Life Insurance. These benefits are in addition to your  medical/hospitalization policy provided by Participating Employers, they serve as a supplement  and can be effective preventive healthcare tools that keep employees and their family happy and healthy.

Shopmen's Local 508 Health & Welfare Fund group benefits allow members and their eligible dependents  to get preventive care, not just care when a problem develops. Early symptoms of high blood pressure, diabetes and other diseases can be detected in an eye exam before showing up in a physical. Visiting  a dentist on a regular basis can prevent oral disease and improve overall heath. Recent clinical studies indicate that early detection of hearing loss followed with appropriate intervention minimizes the need for extensive rehabilitation.

Life Insurance is a key component in the employee ancillary benefit package offered by the Fund. Life insurance can help employees protect their loved ones by providing a monetary benefit to cover the cost of a funeral and help assist the family financially due to the loss of income of the employee or a loved one.

According to the Council for Disability Awareness, 3 in 10 people entering the workforce today will become disabled before retiring. Also, 1 in 7 people can expect to be disabled for five years or more before retirement. Statistics like that make Short-Term Disability Insurance a vital piece of your overall financial plan and an extremely valuable benefit. Employees of a Participating Employer that has Short Term Disability Benefits as part of the benefit package provided by the Fund are eligible to receive weekly benefit should an employee become temporarily disabled, meaning they are  not able to work for a short period of time due to sickness or injury (excluding on-the-job injuries, which are covered by workers compensation insurance).
